East Carolina's Kentrell Barkley (left) and B.J. Tyson talk about the Pirates 82-71 win over USC-Upstate on Friday.

GREENVILLE – USC-Upstate splashed three after three against East Carolina, but in the end the Pirates survived thanks to their slashing style of play to take an 82-71 victory over the Spartans on Friday.
USC-Upstate (1-9) has struggled all season, but on Friday it shot nearly 50 percent from downtown to keep pace with the Pirates (5-3), who won their third straight game thanks to career-high 26 points from B.J. Tyson.
“Not often as a coach do you come out with a ‘W’ when the other team shoots 13 of 27 from three,” said ECU coach Jeff Lebo. “Give them credit, they really attacked the zone and made shots. I’m really proud of my group who understood my game plan, which was to take the ball to the rim.”
The Pirates attack the hoop all night as Tyson’s 26-point outburst was backed by a career-high 18 points from freshman sensation Kentrell Barkley and a 13-point night from guard Caleb White.
“(Tyson) did a good job of not settling,” Lebo said. “Our game plan was pretty similar to what we wanted them to do versus Florida Atlantic, and that was not settle against their zone.
“He’s excellent at driving the ball. They didn’t have a big shot blocker in there. He was able to get there and finish. He got to the free throw line and was eight-for-eight.”
The Spartans were led by Mike Cunningham, who hit five of his seven treys for a team-high 18 points, while Deion Homes nailed four threes to add 15 points.
USC-Upstate traded leads early with ECU, but the Pirates stayed on top for the entire second half.
After scoring only two first-half points, White exploded at the start of the second half nailing back-to-back threes with the second one putting ECU up 45-34 less than two minutes into the second.
As was the case for most of the game, the Spartans kept within striking distance and cut the deficit to 53-50 when Jure Span converted a fastbreak layup with 13:30 to go.
Refusing to panic, ECU got hot once again and used an 8-1 run to take a 61-51 lead after a Barkley three.
East Carolina held a 12-5 advantage early but the Spartans sniped their way back into the game by shooting 42 percent from downtown. Cunningham and Homes led the attack by nailing two three-pointers a piece.
The Pirates countered by controlling the paint and out-rebounded USC-Upstate 17-12 and held an 8-0 advantage in second chance points.
